Using Cinnamon to Lose Weight

Using Cinnamon to Lose Weight

History of Cinnamon Use

Cinnamon is harvested from the bark of a small tree. What we know as cinnamon sticks is actually curled, dried bark. Cinnamon has been used for thousands of years and is even mentioned in several Bible passages. The Chinese have made use of cinnamon's medicinal properties for centuries. Some of the conditions treated with cinnamon are indigestion, stomach ailments, diarrhea, bloating and gas. It is also used as an anti-inflammatory. While it has long been known as a digestive cure, cinnamon is also widely regarded as a weight-loss aid.

Cinnamon and Weight Loss

A study done by the Department of Human Nutrition in Pakistan, and published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, revealed remarkable results on the effect of cinnamon and blood sugar levels. Elevated blood sugar levels and insulin resistance are a widely known cause of obesity. Cinnamon was shown to bring down blood sugar levels, due to a compound it contains called MCHP (methylhydroxychalcone polymer.) MCHP mimics insulin and promotes sugar metabolism. Cinnamon was shown to reduce not only blood sugar levels, but cholesterol and triglyceride levels as well.

Using Cinnamon For Maximum Weight Loss Benefits

Make a tea with honey and cinnamon

Cinnamon can be added to the diet in a number of ways. Add 1/2 a teaspoon of cinnamon to your morning cereal, toast or oatmeal. Sprinkle it in your coffee or tea. Sprinkle cinnamon on fresh apple slices for a healthy alternative to sugary apple pie. Make a tea of 1/2 cup of hot water, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of honey. Drink upon awaking and before bed.
There are many ways to add cinnamon to your diet. The key is to stick with healthy, fresh food alternatives. For example, mixing cinnamon with white sugar before sprinkling it on your toast is not a good way to maximize cinnamon's weight loss benefits. Experiment with the spice and enjoy, knowing that you are improving your overall health.
