Upper Right Abdomen Pain

Upper Right Abdomen Pain

Pain in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen can stem from several organs. This part of the abdomen is home to the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, right kidney and common bile duct. The stomach lies in the upper abdomen, and pain could result from an upset stomach or gas. But more serious conditions could exist.

Gallbladder

A possible cause of right upper quadrant pain is the gallbladder, which lies adjacent to the liver and just under the ribs. Gallstones cause mild to severe abdominal pain, nausea and indigestion. They are common, and can be treated by having the gallbladder removed. Other problems related to the gallbladder are inflammation, known as cholecystitis, and cancer.

Common Bile Duct

The common bile duct is a tube that runs through the liver and pancreas and empties into the stomach. Gallstones can form here or even move from the gallbladder and become lodged in this duct. Pain can occur, possibly accompanied by jaundice.

Liver

Many problems can arise in the liver, although some are not painful. Hepatitis A, B and C can cause pain and jaundice because of swelling. Cancer in the liver is painful. However, it is rare and usually secondary to another cancer elsewhere in the body.

Pancreas

The pancreas can become inflamed, which is called pancreatitis. This too can cause jaundice since the common bile duct is compressed. Pancreatic cancer will cause right upper quadrant pain.

Kidneys

Pain in the area of the kidney can result from several causes. Hydronephrosis (residual urine in the kidney), kidney stones, urinary tract infection and renal cysts are renal problems that cause right upper abdomen pain.
