Does Fish Oil Lower Cholesterol Levels

Lowering cholesterol often involves changing your diet and removing certain foods from what you eat regularly. Many foods increase triglyceride levels in the blood. High triglyceride levels are often related to higher blood cholesterol and thus increased risk for heart disease. Avoiding certain foods and consuming others--such as fish--can help lower your cholesterol.

Bad Fats and Good Fats

    The types of fats you eat are more important than the amount of fat in your diet. Bad fats include saturated and trans fats, which are associated with increased risk for heart disease. These bad fats typically come from food sources such as beef, pork and dairy products. Fish oil is an example of a good fat. It contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which are necessary for proper brain and cell function within the body.

Research Regarding Fish Oil Supplementation

    A number of studies have shown a connection between fish oil consumption and lowered blood cholesterol levels. A 1995 study from Texas Woman's University concluded that fish oil supplements had a noticeable effect on blood cholesterol. Numerous other studies have concluded much of the same. The evidenced to the contrary is scant at best.

Dietary Considerations

    Simply adding fish oil to your diet can have a positive effect on cholesterol levels, but only to a certain extent. You should follow a diet that is rich in fish, turkey, chicken and other high-quality proteins. In addition to these proteins, your diet should consist of high-quality complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, oats and nuts. These foods also contain Omega-3 fatty acids and work in conjunction with the fats obtained from fish to lower cholesterol levels, while providing your body with the carbohydrates needed for energy. Following a diet high in Omega-3 fatty acids from various sources, not just fish oil, will help you to lower cholesterol levels and maintain long-term health.
