There are many big differences between a swollen stomach and a growing stomach. When a person gains weight, often the extra weight shows up in the stomach. However, many diseases, conditions and situations can cause a swollen stomach.
Significance
A swollen stomach and stomach bloating can be caused by a serious or minor medical condition. A swollen stomach is often more pronounced in a child than an adult.
Considerations
Minor conditions that can causes stomach swelling are gas, swallowing air, obesity, constipation or poor muscle tone. Food allergies, food and lactose intolerance, and PMS can all cause a swollen stomach. Pregnancy should be considered another factor for women.
Warning
Several conditions that cause a swollen stomach warrant immediate attention. A hernia, appendicitis, diabetes, ulcers, gallbladder diseases, gallstones, a tumor, cirrhosis, heart failure, bowel cancer and ovarian cancer are all probable causes.
Prevention/Solution
When a swollen stomach is caused by over eating it will recover when the food is digested. Eating smaller meals will help. Avoiding chewing gum, drinking through a straw, sucking on hard candies, and implementing dietary changes can all alleviate a swollen stomach.
Effects
Stress can also cause a swollen stomach. Stress can lead to irritable bowel syndrome and rushed or anxious eating resulting in abdominal swelling.
Warning
If a swollen stomach lingers, if the stomach is tender to the touch, and/or other symptoms are present, consult a doctor.
